Emergency Planning for Individuals with Functional and Access Needs

Individuals with functional and access needs vary in their level of independence.  Some may be independent in their home environment with the addition of structural modifications and/or mobility devises such as a wheelchair or walker.  Others

may have limited independence requiring the assistance of a part-time or full-time caregiver.

In emergency planning for individuals with functional and access needs consider:

  • Mobility needs
  • Transportation needs
  • Durable medical equipment needs
  • Dialysis
  • Medication
  • Special medical treatments
  • Bariatric needs
  • Hygiene needs, such as bandages or diapers
  • Service or comfort animals
  • Other

Individuals may require a higher level of assistance in a shelter environment than the level needed at home.  Shelter cots may not be accessible or appropriate for some individuals.  Wheelchairs and walkers may not have maneuverable space.

For planning purposes, call 2-1-1 for information about available services which may be available during an emergency.

Be sure to label your equipment with your name and contact information. You may want to secure a copy of the person’s medical information to them in a sealed pocket or plastic bag. This extra step will assist in reunification and/or provide information

to a rescuer/first responder if you are separated during the evacuation.
